Colon Hydrotherapy

Your questions answered:

What is the colon?

The colon is the second half of the intestine. The first half is called the small intestine because the tube is narrow although it is more than 6 metres (18 feet) long. The second half is called the large intestine because it is wider but only 2 metres (6 feet) long. The large intestine is also called the colon or bowel. Food is absorbed in the small intestine, and water is absorbed in the large intestine. The dried residue that remains in the colon is the faeces or stool. The colon can become diseased due to infection or wrong diet. Every organ in the body is dependent on the colon being normal and healthy.

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?

Colonic Hydrotherapy is a natural treatment using filtered warm water coupled with special abdominal massage techniques to gently cleanse the bowel of old, and possibly, toxic residues.

What does the treatment consist of?

Colonic irrigation consists of slowly introducing warm purified water into the colon under low pressure, via a small tube. When the colon is filled, the water is allowed to flow out through a larger tube, bringing with it any loose stool. This process is carried out a number of times during the treatment, which lasts for 30 to 40 minutes. The result is a gentle flushing of the colon, and loosening of old faecal matter.

Is the treatment painful?

No. The treatment is not painful. You may feel a slight discomfort or pressure which is then released.

Where in the colon is the old faecal matter?

It can be in pockets in the colon wall, called diverticuli, or can be “glued” to any part of the colon wall.

How much old faecal debris can be stuck in the colon?

3-5lbs of faeces is probably an average amount that can be lodged in the colon, although sometimes more can be present (this does not include the “transient matter” present at any time).

Why doesn't the faeces which has adhered to the colon move through in the normal course of events?

Because the old matter will be lodged in pockets or stuck to the bowel wall. (It has been known for objects such as marbles to come through, after having being swallowed in childhood!)

Do colonics help diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea is often caused by pathogenic organisms or an irritant (plant or chemical) that are in the colon. Colonics are often very helpful in flushing them out.

Can some people have faeces stuck in the colon and not be ill?

Yes, although often people will display symptoms of a toxic condition before it turns into an identifiable or serious illness; e.g. fatigue and tiredness, skin problems, bad breath, joint pain, etc. This condition was observed by Dr Bernard Jenson DC. ND. and fully described in his books on Iridology, and Colon Cleansing.

How long does it take to clean out the bowel completely?

It depends on the condition of the colon. People with minor problems may be “cleaned out” after 6 treatments or less. Someone who has many problems may need more. Short bursts of intensive therapy –a week or so at a time, with a rest period in between, are generally the norm.

Is it possible to perforate or over-stretch the bowel through colonic irrigation?

No, due to the low pressure used (50 millibars , which is one quarter of the pressure of a normal heart beat). More often the bowel will be over-stretched or distorted due to the retention of old faecal matter.

Does colonic irrigation wash out all the good bacteria in the bowel?

Most of the loose bacteria living in the colon will be expelled along with the putrefactive bacteria and parasites. With the removal of the old waste there will be a better chance of long-term colonisation of the bowel with good bacteria. In the short term “restocking” of the bowel flora along with diet will encourage these “good” bacteria.

How does a Colon Hydrotherapy treatment compare to an Enema?

An enema only reaches the rectum and lower part of the colon, whereas with colon hydrotherapy, the entire length of the colon (the large intestinal tract approximately 5 to 51/2 feet in length) is reached. Colon hydrotherapy is much more effective. According Dr. Norman Walker, "One colon irrigation is equivalent to 30 enemas." From Colon Health - a Key to a Vibrant Life, by Dr Norman Walker.

Are there any circumstances in which colonic irrigation is not recommended?

Yes. If the patient has severe cardiac disease, high blood pressure (above 160 systolic), aneurysm, cirrhosis, carcinoma of the colon or rectum, advanced pregnancy, and any recent abdominal, hernia, colon, or rectal surgery. A qualified colonic therapist should take a detailed history and be made aware of any conditions for which colonic irrigation is not advised.
